University education, emerging sciences, and public discourse around artificial intelligence

One of the common concerns of the society is humane application of technology. Artificial intelligence (AI), an emerging field of scientific endeavor with significant practical applications, is also fraught with important ethical considerations, fears and disagreements about what is possible, what should not be attempted, what would be classified as social progress, and how to navigate the challenges. Studies of consciousness and “strong AI” have implications for various belief systems including religious communities. This presentation is an attempt to identify elements of a conceptual framework, engaging the participants in a collective exploration in light of Bahá’í principles of oneness and justice for humanity, our conception of history and social progress, and in coherence with goals and aspirations of the worldwide Bahá’í community.
