This presentation explores the definition and purpose of health from a scientific and spiritual perspective. Connections will be drawn between the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh and inquiries into the concept of health. Implications for change in attitudes and practices will be explored by sharing the example of a case study at a community health center. Participants will be exposed to the latest evidence on the social determinants of health and recognize the pivotal role of the Institute process in building the capacity for health in all aspects of life. This presentation represents the application of critical concepts that we are learning about in the field. Key questions that have arisen surrounding the relationships between the determinants of health and the community building framework will be explored.
Shahrzad Saririan
Dr. Shahrzad Saririan is a Family Physician and Medical Educator. She practices at a local Community Health Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She completed a fellowship in faculty development and currently serves as the founding Director of the Primary Care Scholars Program, Director of the Family Medicine Clerkship and faculty in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. Among her current academic interests are how to advance the discourse on social determinants of health and the role of community in addressing health.

Farshad Fani Marvasti
Farshad (Shad) Fani Marvasti, MD, MPH is practicing physician and an Associate Professor of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine at the College of Medicine Phoenix and Associate Professor in the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona. Dr. Marvasti is the founding Director of The Culinary Medicine Program and the Certificate of Distinction in Wellness, Integrative Medicine, and Nutrition.
